Currency

Currency
by Virginia Hoge

There has been a grave misunderstanding of the concept of "Currency" in our country today. The misunderstanding is as much on the Left as it is on the Right. This is what has made it so dangerous.

Currency today is interpreted literally as money. Money has been exalted as a means to all ends. The comforts offered by money have been witnessed, exalted and worse, accepted, by a prosperous nation. In accepting these comforts, too much has also been tacitly accepted as well. For instance, we have been barraged by advertising, sent to us by corporate media for years. Nothing could have a clearer connection to money than advertising! Less and less is this advertising questioned. Glossy car advertising, for instance, has been nothing less than astoundingly successful, prompting people to pay huge sums (which surely include the hefty advertising budget) for fancy cars.

This interpretation of Currency absolutely leads to the devaluation of people without money. Worth is measured by wealth. The things "worth having" are considered to be those you pay for.

This points to the other interpretation of the word "Currency". In a spiritual sense, currency is the value of human beings. This concept is Love not Money. People are what is to be valued and their dignity as human beings, the well-spring of "Truth". This is the true meaning of the word Currency, the currency of ALL human beings and the maintenance of their sustenance in the world. Every long-standing spiritual concept in the world comes back to this basic truth: people are the currency of the world, not money!

In the Egyptian book of the dead, a woman who has died is led before the judges who will decide if she gets to go on to eternal life, or not. Before her is a scale, on which they place her eyes and mouth. The scale, weighs nothing but Truth. Did she speak the truth? Does she want her eyes back?

I find this story so interesting because it is so right on. Are we really using our eyes? if we are, then we will see the world is filled with grave injustices. We are then called to use our mouths, to speak out against them.

This is exactly how the world proceeds forward, the positive actions of individuals. Without it, the world falls into death and destruction. A simple misinterpretation of the word "currency" can and will, lead to a bad end.
